Spelling Rules/Patterns:
Lesson 1: /ă/ says ă like in cat CVC words have 1 vowel that says the short sound.
Lesson 2: /ĕ/ says ĕ like in pet. CVC words have 1 vowel that says the short sound.
Lesson 3: /ĭ/ says ĭ like in kid. CVC words have 1 vowel that says the short sound.
Lesson 4: /ŏ/ says ŏ like in hop. CVC words have 1 vowel that says the short sound.
Lesson 5: /ŭ/ says ŭ like in sun. CVC words have 1 vowel that says the short sound.
Lesson 6: Silent E. Silent final e makes the vowel say its long name._/ā/_e and _/ī/_e

Lesson 8: /ck/ and /qu/-Use –ck at the end of a short vowel word. Qu- is always used
together, q never stands alone. ck says /k/qu says /kw/

combine to make one sound or phoneme. /th//ph/ says /f/
Lesson 10: /sh/ and /wh/. A digraph is when two letter sounds or phonemes combine
to make one sound or phoneme. /sh/ in ship/wh/ in whale
Lesson 11: /ch/ /tch/.If the vowel sound is short, does the /ch/ sound come after a
consonant such as l, n or r? If no, add TCH. If yes, add CH. /ch/ in
chalk/tch/ in patch
Lesson 12: L Blends. A Blend is two consonants together in a word that keep their
own sounds. Blends can be found anywhere in a word but must be able to
start a word. /bl/ /cl/ /fl/ /gl/ /pl/ /sl/
Lesson 13: R Blends-A Blend is two consonants together in a word that keep their
own sounds. Blends can be found anywhere in a word but must be able to
start a word. /br/ /cr/ /dr/ /fr/ /gr/ /pr/ /sr/
Lesson 14: -NG Blends-A Blend is two consonants together in a word that keep their
own sounds. Blends can be found anywhere in a word but must be able
to start a word. /ng/ in patch-
Lesson 15: Special Sounds-Long A-When two vowels are next to each other, the first
vowel is usually long (the sound is the same as the sound of the letter)
and the second vowel is silent. /ai/ /ay/ /ey/ all say long /ā/

vowel is usually long (the sound is the same as the sound of the letter) and

Lesson 19: Special Sounds /ou/ and /ow/-When you hear the /ow/ sound at the
beginning or in the middle of a syllable, it is usually spelled ou. When you
hear the /ow/ sound at the end of a syllable, it is usually spelled ow. /ou/
and /ow/
Lesson 20: Special Sounds /oi/ and /oy/-If the /oy/ sound is at the beginning or
middle, use oi. If the /oy/ sound is at the end, use oy. /oi/ and /oy/
Lesson 21: Special Sounds-OO-/oo/ in book and /oo/ in tooth
Lesson 22: Special Sounds-/igh/ sounds like long /ī/

Lesson 24 : Bossy R’s: R-Controlled Vowels-When the letter r follows a vowel, the
vowel is usually forced to change its sound. That’s why it is called the “
Bossy R ”. In most small words with one vowel in the middle, that vowel
has a short vowel sound. /ar/ /or/

Lesson 29: Hard/Soft G-When g is followed by e , i, y it sounds like “ j ”. (There are
some exceptions to this rule.) When g meets a, o, or u, its sound is hard.

of 1 syllable words. /ff/ as in cliff/ll/ as in bell
