This is a set of 30 math worksheets for first grade. They give students structured practice in solving addition and subtraction word problems. This is a tricky skill because it involves both math and reading comprehension.
opportunities to use multiple strategies
plenty of space to show work
easy to read text
clear primary fonts
All of the word problems in this pack involve addition or subtraction within 20.
These include situations of:
more than two addends
Each worksheet presents students with a story problem in an easy to read format. Space is provided to draw a picture or model, use ten frames, use a number line, and write an equation. This allows you to see their use of strategies from the more concrete to the abstract.
This resource includes 30 worksheets in two formats:
full page (1 problem per page)
half page (2 per page)
If you want to use these with older students who are working below grade level, I suggest using the smaller half-page size. They will look more “grown up” but still have plenty of space to show work
These word problems are written to meet first grade math standards but will work for high level kindergarteners or second graders who need remediation. For students who need extra support, I suggest letting them use manipulatives so they can build a model before drawing one on the page.
