This April themed writing prompts resource includes 15 themed prompts to get students thinking and writing about their knowledge of and experiences with topics related to the calendar month of April. There are 5 writing prompts for each of the following categories: opinion writing, informative/explanatory writing, and narrative writing.

We have also included mini versions of each writing prompt that can easily be pasted into an interactive notebook or writing journal and completed therein. Additionally, there is a cover page that can be colored by the students and stapled to their completed writing prompts.

Opinion Writing Prompts

  • National Wildlife Week is in April. What responsibility do you think people have to maintain the environments of wild animals?
  • Is spring cleaning something that your family feels is important? How do you help?
  • April 30th is National Honesty Day. Should people be totally honest all of the time? Explain.
  • April 26th is Hug a Friend Day. Do you think people need hugs to stay emotionally healthy? Why or Why not?
  • Drop Everything And Read Day is April 12th. Do you think it’s important for families to read together for 30 minutes each day?

Informative/Explanatory Writing Prompts

  • April 1st is April Fools Day. Explain the difference between a funny prank and a mean prank.
  • April is National Garden Month. What experiences have you had with a garden or growing plants in pots?
  • Personalize the boots and umbrella to reflect your interests. Explain what your design tells about you.
  • Earth Day is April 22nd. Explain how your family reduces, reuses, and recycles.
  • April 29th is Penguin Day. Research a species of penguin and write to share your information with others.

Narrative Writing Prompts

  • April showers bring May flowers. Write to tell about your favorite things to do on a rainy day.
  • In the spirit of Earth Day, tell about a time when you reused old items to make something new.
  • April 10th is National Sibling Day. Write about the benefits and the disadvantages of having a sibling.
