Item description

This science-integrated observation drawing activity has students observe flower paintings, then draw and shade in large-scale flowers in the style of Georgia O’Keeffe.

The art lesson is introduced with an observation of several of O’Keeffe’s flower paintings with a focus on detail, radial symmetry, and shading. After discussing O’Keeffe’s work, students create their own drawings.

Art meets informational text. Extend the activity by having students read about O’Keeffe and respond to informational text, and also by having them write about their art work.

Great for Mother’s Day, units on plants, and for celebrating Spring!

O’Keeffe-inspired Flowers includes the following:

– a list of art concepts and skills addressed
– a list of materials needed

– targeted art and related vocabulary

– detailed steps for introducing the lesson

– directions for drawing the large-scale flowers

– directions for using pastels or watercolors for shading

– ideas for extending or varying the lesson

– ideas for looking at and discussing art

– suggestions for writing about art

– photographs of student work and lesson charts for reference

Also included: Informational text reading/response printables:

• About Georgia O’Keeffe – informational text artist biography

• Thinking about Georgia O’Keeffe – a “draw and write” response worksheet

This comprehensive art lesson is designed to teach art appreciation, artist behavior, and art analysis, and to foster authentic art-making and art education.

National Core Visual Arts Standards are listed at the beginning of the lesson.

Listed grade levels are suggestions only; any of these lessons can be simplified or made more complex to work for any elementary grade.
