Beginning Blends Activity is great for introducing, practicing, and assessing your students’ letter-sound knowledge.

As students master letter sounds, they are able to blend them together to form words. Learning common blends and their patterns increases understanding. These beginning blends mats will help students gain confidence in identifying beginning blends. Perfect for beginning readers!

Beginning blends activity mats in 2 levels. 2 differentiated recording sheets for each level, 2 story writing pages and answer keys.

BEGINNING BLENDS INCLUDED:

L-Blends: bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl

R-Blends: br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr

S-Blends: sc, sk, sm, sn, sp, st, sw

and tw blend.

SKILLS/STANDARDS ADDRESSED:

Students will blend and segment onsets and rimes of single-syllable spoken words. Students will also orally produce one-syllable and two-syllable words by blending sounds, including consonant blends, and know the spelling-sound correspondences for common consonant blends or clusters.

2 BEGINNING BLENDS MAT OPTIONS.

Each mat has 8 pictures and a focus beginning blend.

LEVEL 1 HEART – All 8 pictures begin with the same beginning blend.

LEVEL 2 STAR –2 or 3 pictures do not have the same beginning blend.

LEVEL 1 beginning blend mat, students will say the name of each picture (they may need support or teacher to say the picture names), identify the beginning blend, and color the pictures that begin with the focus beginning blend. Recording sheets add writing practice and help the student visualize the beginning blends in words and see patterns. Use the recording sheet with traceable words or with a word bank.

LEVEL 2 letter sound mat, students will say the name of each picture, identify the beginning blend and color only the pictures that begin with the focus beginning blend. Recording sheets add writing practice and help the student visualize the beginning blends in words and see patterns. Use the recording sheet with word bank or the one without.

The answer keys provide the names of each picture.
