Item description

This resource includes six different stations that each utilize candy canes in some way. These activities are perfect for the days leading up to Winter break or the Christmas holiday. You can even use them for a fun theme day. Ask students to wear red and white to school, play holiday music, and have them rotate through these centers.

Includes:

CANDY CANE MEASUREMENT

In this center, students will practice using non-standard units (candy canes) to measure various items throughout the classroom. Includes instructions, task cards, and recording sheets.

CANDY CANE SCIENCE

This is a teacher-directed activity to explore how various substances affect candy canes and to demonstrate that matter can change. Students will make predictions about what might happen and record their observations. Includes instructions and lab booklet.

ESTIMATION CENTER

For this center, students estimate the total number of candy canes that are concealed inside a cardboard tube. Includes instructions and recording sheets.

CANDY CANE PATTERNS

This is a coloring activity in which students try to color candy canes with as many different repeating patterns as possibly using only red, green, and white. Includes instructions and coloring page.

WORD MAKER

In this center, students will use the letters in CANDY CANE to make more words. They cut out letters at the bottom of the worksheet and use them for word building. Includes instructions and worksheet.

PEPPERMINT HOT CHOCOLATE

This center is purely fun! You’ll need to make hot cocoa for the class. I find the easiest way is in my crock pot. This makes a large amount that you can keep warm easily. You will also need cups, small marshmallows, and candy canes. Give students a cup of cocoa. Let them count out 10 marshmallows to put in their cup. Then they use the cane as a stirrer to add a little minty flavor.

Each center also includes a sign with instructions. These activities are most appropriate for first to second grade.
