Your students will be amazed as you show them how to levitate a piece of tinsel using static electricity as the force in the Christmas science activity! Even if students don’t celebrate Christmas they can still appreciate this static force that uses common materials. Complete instructions to build and create a static charge are presented in a visual format. The activity is fun and connects to the NGSS. Details are provided.

Important note: Winter is the optimal time for static electricity effects. Very cold and dry days are required for this to work. On warmer or humid days, the presence of water in the atmosphere inhibits this weak force. This effect also does not work with all kinds of tinsel. These details are discussed in the packet.
