Sentence starters and transition words are included to help students write strong evidence and reasoning sentences.

Guided Practice “Warm-Up” Page

Introduces a teacher character, “Mr. Gray,” and his alter ego, “Stanley the Skeptic.”
Stanley challenges students to prove his unusual claims about health and wellness are wrong by using CER.
Students practice determining the question that needs to be answered, identifying relevant evidence that answers the question, developing a claim, and creating a reasoning sentence.

Students assume the role of Mr. Gray’s students who have accepted the challenge to prove “Stanley the Skeptic’s” unusual claims are wrong.
Each activity page features one of Stanley’s unusual claims about a health and wellness topic.
Determine the question that needs to be answered to prove Stanley is wrong.
Identify which 3 pieces of evidence are relevant to the question.
