When to Use Duration Data

Feel like frequency behavior data alone isn’t giving a true
picture of what is going on with your tough students? For example, showing that
a student exhibits tantrum behavior 3 times per week, but not showing how long
tantrums last doesn’t paint the entire picture. Instead, create a duration
graph for the behavior.

A duration recording data sheet is perfect if you are
concerned about how long the student engages in a specific behavior and the
behavior has a clear beginning and end.

Note: You would not want to use this method for behaviors
that occur in short spurts or infrequently.

How to Use Duration (ABA)

Use the duration recording form throughout the week to track
long-lasting problem behaviors. Then, at the end of the week, enter the total
number of incidents and the total number of minutes into the dated weekly
spreadsheet.

The data entered on the spreadsheet will automatically
create duration graphs in Excel (for up to 3 problem behaviors). You will be
left with clean and clear graphs that can be easily shared with students,
parents, and administrators.

Add Phaselines to Your Graph

To increase the usefulness of your graph, consider using
phase lines. Add a phase line to the graph when changes occur (medication,
class, living situation, etc.). Over time you will be able to use this
information to help determine the potential causes of behavioral difficulties
or potential reasons for behavior improvement.

Graphs with phase lines can be especially helpful when
working with students who have a Behavior Intervention Plan, as they help you
determine the effectiveness of your interventions. You will find instructions
on how to use phase lines included in your purchase.

Note

The graph would work in Excel or Google Sheets, but you must
use Excel if you want to enter phase lines, as Google Sheets does not have this
feature.
