Item description

Learning to choose the best word for a particular situation or setting can improve students’ confidence in their writing skills. This set of 3 worksheets provides practice in thinking about a setting and choosing words appropriate for that setting.

The worksheets are similar – each has 10 sentences with a blank. Students are given 3 words to choose from to complete each sentence. One worksheet asks them to choose words to make sentences they might find in a scary story. Another worksheet has sentences about a pleasant ski trip. The third worksheet asks them to complete the sentences as in a story about a bad storm.

These worksheets require students to think about each situation and choose the best words. The words should be familiar for grades 3-5, but a few could be challenging for some third graders.

This resource supports Common Core standards L.3.3a, L.3.5, L.3.5b, L.4.3a, L.4.5

This resource is also available in Google Drive format:  Effective Writing – Choosing the Best Word – 3 worksheets – Grades 3-5 – CCSS – Google Drive
