Students respond to several statements that challenge or support their preconceived ideas about key concepts as well as their peers’ ideas. The Anticipation Guides can help structure meaningful conversations that reviews what students already know and engages them in critical thinking about the topic they will be exploring. The statements in the Anticipation Guides can spark some great discussions among students!! This Anticipation Guide and Self-Assessment focuses on Empathy.

▶️ ANTICIPATION GUIDES

There is ONE Anticipation Guide that comes in two different variations:

✅ Variation #1:

⭐ Part 1: List of statements with “AGREE” and “DISAGREE” columns. Here, students read the statements and only check off “AGREE” or “DISAGREE.”

⭐ Part 2: At the bottom of this same Anticipation Guide, students are asked to select a statement from above and explain its significance to them. They may discuss how the statement relates to them, their personal experience with it, or their thoughts about it in greater detail.

✅ Variation #2: List of statements with “AGREE,” “DISAGREE,” and “COMMENTS” columns. Here, students read the statements and check off “AGREE” or “DISAGREE” and expand their thinking (or ideas) of each of the statements by writing them in the last column titled “COMMENTS.”

▶️ SELF-ASSESSMENT

There is ONE Empathy Self-Assessment included in this resource. Students will assess their empathy and understanding of others’ feelings and perspectives using the statements provided. They will rate each statement with a score: 2 for “Always,” 1 for “Sometimes,” and 0 for “Never.” Lastly, they will use the rubric to self-assess and rate themselves on the empathy-related behaviors or thoughts. Students will add up their scores to determine their level of empathy skills.

You can also utilize these assessment statements to delve into students’ abilities and their perspectives on the topic!
