ESL Activities:  Speaking Practice includes quick activities to help lower students’ affective filters about state language assessments. This product includes a PDF of 23 graphic organizers for high-interest topics, plus accompanying Google slides that students can use to create mini-presentations for speaking practice. Each assignment gives students the opportunity to speak about topics that they care about. The speaking topics are designed to allow Level 1 and Level 2 WIDA students to participate fully, but voice recording, keyboarding, and digital media practice are exercises that will benefit all level of students. We started with time for students to complete graphic organizers. They then searched for photos to insert into a Google slide presentation to represent their ideas. This gives students the opportunity to practice the digital media skills they need to succeed in the content area classroom. I’ve included both a 45-minute timer and a 60-minute timer to give students the opportunity to experience how it feels to be timed and to conclude a speaking exercise. We practiced using the 45-minute timer, then the 60-minute timer, and then without the timers all together. There is also a place for students to type their responses so they can practice the keyboarding skills necessary for state language tests. I hope your students enjoy sharing their ideas about these high-interest topics.
