This fire safety and prevention themed writing prompts resource includes 15 themed prompts to get students thinking and writing about their knowledge of and experiences with fire safety and prevention and what they learned during Fire Prevention Month. There are 5 writing prompts for each of the following categories: opinion writing, informative/explanatory writing, and narrative writing.

We have also included mini versions of each writing prompt that can easily be pasted into an interactive notebook or writing journal and completed therein. Additionally, there is a cover page that can be colored by the students and stapled to their completed writing prompts.

Opinion Writing Prompts

  • October is Fire Prevention Month. What should lessons about fire prevention and safety include?
  • Is it important to practice fire drills at home like you do in school?
  • Are firefighters heroes? Explain why or why not.
  • Should a group of emergency vehicles always respond to a single phone call? For what purpose?
  • How might the image of a firefighter in full gear and a mask affect a child in a fire? Why do children hide during a fire?

Informative/Explanatory Writing Prompts

  • Explain the stop, drop, and role message. Why is that important for you to know?
  • What do you know about the effects of smoke and how to protect yourself?
  • Why are fire hydrants placed on the streets around the community? How are they kept in working order?
  • How is working as a team an important skill for firefighters? What situations require teamwork?
  • Do you know where to meet your family in case of a fire? Have you discussed escape routes from each room in the house? Explain.

Narrative Writing Prompts

  • Tell about a visit to a fire station or a talk from a firefighter at your school. What did you learn?
  • Discuss the information that an emergency dispatcher will need to know when responding to your call.
  • What fire prevention strategies can you use for outdoor activities? Why would they would be helpful?
  • Imagine that you are a firefighter on duty. What is your life like at the station? What do you do when an alarm sounds?
  • Imagine that you are the safety director for your school during a fire drill. What do you do to make sure everyone gets out safely?
