This resource begins with a printable handout (for teacher/student reference) which contains clear, easy-to-understand background information on the different types of fossils and the process of fossilisation. This is followed by two handy black-and-white Student Worksheets, two Answer Sheets as well as a differentiated (cut-and-paste/drag-and-drop) version of one of the worksheets. Suitable for students in years 8 – 10, Fossils and Fossilisation can be used as class work, homework or as a revision exercise.

• definition of a ‘fossil’

• types of fossils: trace fossils, impression fossils and biosignatures

• difference between a ‘mould‘ and a ‘cast‘

• the process of fossilisation

• conditions in which fossilisation is most likely to occur.
