French Family Reading Comprehension Print & Google Forms

Need reading comprehension practice with la famille? Here are 2 implementation options: print and/or digital & self-grading! Beginner and intermediate French students will practice reading skills with family and description vocabulary in this comprehensible activity including 4 reading passages and 20 comprehension questions. Available as a PDF or Google Forms™. Suitable for immersion and comprehensible input classrooms.

Students will:

-Read 4 different letters in French

-Answer 5 questions after each reading passage

*Each reading passage and subsequent questions are shown as images in Forms™ to prevent students from using the automatic translator.*

Types of questions include:

-vrai/faux
-fill-in the blank
-multiple choice
-apply a written word with an image
-choose all correct answers

To whom is this resource geared?

-Established beginners and intermediate French students

-All letters are in the present tense and use simple vocabulary with many cognates.

Which vocabulary words can I expect?

Family vocab : les grands-parents, le grand-père, la grand-mère, le père, la mère, le frère, la sœur, le chat, le chien, le lézard

Other vocab: ages, cognates, adjectives (sportif, gentil, patient, généreux, content, nerveux, actif)

Potential new words: un gâteau, la maison, les voitures, combien, où, habiter

You could ask students to complete this individually for practice or self-assessment. Then, it could be beneficial to go back through the written text and discuss the answers as a class. When students can explain their answers, they move from knowledge of the text to analyzing and synthesizing the text. Growth and learning!!

Three implementation options:

1. Google Forms™

This is an editable activity designed in Google Forms™. You can add questions of your own to the activity or delete any questions you do not want to use. You can also change the answer type if desired (short answer, multiple-choice, etc.) or switch the order of the questions.

After you download the activity, you will receive a PDF with instructions on how to download this file to your Google Drive™ and how to share with students. You and your students must have a free Google™ account in order to access the activity.

This activity can be shared with students through email, Google Classroom, Moodle, etc.

2. Printable as PDF

Each passage and its accompanying 5 questions are on one page. Answer keys provided. Combine all 4 readers into a packet for enhanced reading practice. Or, give the text separately as HW, quiz, partner work, etc.
