Item description

This US History reading and assessment activity helps address several Common Core ELA Standards that are listed below this introduction and is suitable for Grades 5-8. Students will read an informative 1000-word biographical text on the only American President to serve non-consecutive terms in the Oval Office, the great Grover Cleveland. The article traces his larger-than-life character and the actions of the man who was both our 22nd and 24th US President! It looks closely at the moments in American history that were influenced by his actions, such as the Panic of 1893 and the revolt of the Mugwumps in the 1884 election. After the reading are twenty-four fill-in-the-blank, multiple-choice, and writing questions that require application of Common Core Standards to a thorough close reading of the biography. There is also a crossword puzzle for your early finishers or to use as another form of assessment included with this resource. Answers are provided for all questions. This resource can be used in a number of ways by teachers (close reading, direct instruction in class, independent practice, absence work, homework, test prep, assessment, centers, etc).
