Item description
Introduce some Halloween science into your classroom with a CSI forensic crime investigation! In this chromatography activity, a note was left behind at the scene of a crime (a pumpkin was taken!). The suspects include Dr. Cra Zee, Frankenstein, The Count and others! The activity requires you to gather 4-6 different brands of black markers (permanent and water-soluble). Students perform chromatography on a small piece of the note and compare the color pattern to the pattern of the suspect’s markers to identify which marker was used to write the note. This is a fun, hands-on forensic activity for middle school and upper elementary students.
Directions to run and set up the activity are completely described. The materials, procedure and results can be incorporated into a laboratory notebook or a small decorative poster. A grading rubric is included for the poster. Happy Sleuthing!

Dr. David Purvis. After obtaining a PhD in Microbiology, I switched careers and became a middle school and elementary science teacher because I loved kids. Almost thirty years later I have taught science in some context to every grade level from pre-K to college education classes. My store offers rigorous resources that align meaningful content, an inquiry approach, NGSS standards, and student interest.
