This Novel Study BUNDLE has everything you need to engage your class in a novel study of Inside Out & Back Again, by Thanhha Lai. Students will respond to higher-level short-answer questions, deepen their vocabulary knowledge; analyze quotes, symbolism; figurative language; and themes. The activities included in this product require students to investigate literary elements (e.g. tone, mood, plot, setting, theme, point of view, conflict, etc.) as well as literary devices & techniques (e.g. flashbacks, foreshadowing, figurative language, imagery, etc.). Graphic Organizers (8 pages)

  • Character Analysis (1 page) – Students will choose a character from the story. Fill in the graphic organizer with their internal (thoughts, feelings) and external (actions, dialogue, appearance) character traits.
  • Character Summary (1 page) – Students will choose a character from the story. Fill in the graphic organizer with a physical description of the character, the challenges they faced and overcame, flaws, and best characteristics, and create a timeline of 5 main events that shaped that character.
  • Character Change (1 page) – Students will choose a character from the story. Fill in the graphic organizer with information on how that character has changed throughout the story.
  • Finding Figurative Language (2 pages) – Students will identify and record examples of figurative language the author used in the book, determining the type, meaning, and the author’s purpose.
  • Chain of Events (1 page) – Students will show how one event led to another in the novel.
  • Problem & Solution (1 page) – Students will fill in the graphic organizer with problems that the characters face and their solutions to those problems.
  • Visualization / Imagery (1 page) – Students will describe an event from the story using all 5 of their senses.

Vocabulary Study: This vocabulary study provides vocabulary activities and quizzes for words that appear in the novel.

Figurative Language Study (21 pages total)

  • Figurative Language Notes Handouts (Simile, Metaphor, Personification)
  • Figuring Out Figurative Language Activities — (18 pages total) – Students will identify figurative language in passages taken from the novel, Inside Out & Back Again. Then, students will determine the type, meaning, and author’s purpose for including the figurative language identified in each passage. This activity can be divided up by splitting the class into groups and having each group work on different pages for a section of chapters. It could also be divided up and assigned as a bell ringer, warm-up activity, or exit ticket.

Theme Study (6 themes, 2 pages each – 12 pages total) – Students will answer theme-related questions using themes present in the novel, Inside Out & Back Again. This is a great activity to split the class into groups and have each group work on a different theme. Some themes are more difficult, so be sure to preview the questions to properly differentiate for your students.

Symbolism Analysis ( 6 symbols with questions, 3 pages total) – Students will analyze and identify various symbols and the use of symbolism in the book, Inside Out & Back Again. This is a great activity to split the class into groups and have each group analyze a different symbol. Some symbols are more difficult, so be sure to preview the questions to properly differentiate for your students.

Photograph Analysis ( 8 photographs with questions, 5 pages total) – Students will compare a photograph taken during the 1960s and 1970s in Vietnam to the story, Inside Out & Back Again. Then, they discuss their comparisons with a partner and answer the questions on the provided chart with a partner or independently.

Quote Analysis (16 pages total)

  • 2 Quote Connections (6 pages) – Students will give thoughtful responses to the questions relating to the provided quotes using the story, Inside Out & Back Again, personal opinions, experiences & background knowledge to guide their thinking.
  • 3 Quote Activities (4 pages total) – 60 quote cards are included. Students will use these quotations to complete the following activities.
  • Meaning & Image (1 page + Rubric) – Students will choose a favorite quote or scene from Inside Out & Back Again to create an image that represents the quote using appropriate scenes, characters, and items. Then, students will write an explanation regarding what the quote means to them.
  • Quote Pair Up – (1 page) – Students will choose 2 quotes by the author, Thanhha Lai, from the novel, Inside Out & Back Again, and find a quotation (online, in another book, from the included quote cards, etc.) by another person that is similar, opposite, or related to each of the quotes they chose. Then, students will explain how the quotes are similar, different, or connected to one another.
  • Inspirational Quote (1 page) – Students will choose one of the quotations from the included quote cards. Then, students will add an illustration that depicts the quote to create an inspirational poster.
  • 60 Quote Cards – (10 pages, 6 on a page) – For long-term use, print the quote cards on cardstock and laminate them before cutting them apart. These quote cards can be used with many of the included quote activities and in various other ways.
