  • Figurative Language Notes Handouts – Be sure to pre-teach or review the types of figurative language included and provide the notes handout to students to reference.
  • Figuring Out Figurative Language Activities – Students will identify figurative language in passages taken from the novel, A Night Divided. Then, students will determine the type, meaning, and author’s purpose for including the figurative language identified in each passage. This activity can be divided up by splitting the class into groups and having each group work on different pages for a section of chapters. It could also be divided up and assigned as a bell ringer, warm-up activity, or exit ticket. (INCLUDES ANSWER KEY)
  • Theme Study – Students will answer theme-related questions using themes present in the novel, A Night Divided. This is a great activity to split the class into groups and have each group work on a different theme. Some themes are more difficult, be sure to preview the questions to differentiate for your students.
  • Symbolism Analysis  Students will analyze and identify various symbols and the use of symbolism in the book, “A Night Divided.” This is a great activity to split the class into groups and have each group analyze a different symbol.   • 5 Quote Connections – Students will give thoughtful responses to the questions relating to the provided quotes using the story, “A Night Divided,” personal opinions, experiences, & background knowledge to guide their thinking.
  • 6 Quote Activities – 60 quote cards are included. Students will use these quotations to complete the following activities.
  • Hoodie & Design Perspective – Students will respond to a question by designing a hoodie. Then, they will include evidence from the book that supports their design.
  • Meaning & Image – Students will choose a favorite quote or scene from A Night Divided to create an image that represents the quote using appropriate scenes, characters, and items. Then, students will write an explanation regarding what the quote means to them.
  • 2- Quote Pair Up – Students will choose 2 quotes by the author, Jennifer A. Nielsen, from the novel, A Night Divided, and find a quotation (online, in another book, from the included quote cards, etc.) by another person that is similar, opposite, or related to each of the quotes they chose. Then, students will explain how the quotes are similar, different, or connect to one another. Students will also compare and contrast 2 quotes and determine which quote they think provides better advice.
  • Important Quotes – Students will choose 3 quotes from the story and explain why the quotes are significant to the story.
  • Inspirational Quote – Students will Choose one of the quotations from the included quote cards. Then, students will add an illustration that depicts the quote to create an inspirational poster.
  • 60 Quote Cards – For long time use, print the quote cards on cardstock and laminate them before cutting them apart. These quote cards can be used with many of the included quote activities and in various other ways.

Bonus Activities

  • The Perfect Playlist – Students will design a soundtrack with a playlist to represent big ideas found within the story.
  • Gerta on the ‘Gram – Students create an Instagram post of one of the events from the story.
