This Labor Day writing prompts resource includes 15 themed prompts to get students thinking and writing about Labor Day and the associated experiences and activities. There are 5 writing prompts for each of the following categories: opinion writing, informative/explanatory writing, and narrative writing.

We have also included mini versions of each writing prompt that can easily be pasted into an interactive notebook or writing journal and completed therein. Additionally, there is a cover page that can be colored by the students and stapled to their completed writing prompts.

• Should cities plan family activities for Labor Day? What activities would you suggest?
• Safety is always important. What rules could you suggest for a safe Labor Day weekend?

Informative/Explanatory Writing Prompts

• Labor Day sales are second only to Christmas. Can you explain why this happens each year?
• Why do you think so many schools start the school year after Labor Day? Would this be a good idea for your family?
• Explain which workers should not have Labor Day off. Why? What would happen?
• What field do you want to work in when you join the workforce? What are your strengths?
• What special foods will your family prepare for Labor Day?

Narrative Writing Prompts

• Labor Day can make for a great extended weekend. Tell about a time when your family vacationed over a long weekend.
• How is Labor Day celebrated today? In which events have you participated?
• Think of the labor that your mom and dad do for you every day. Write to tell of your appreciation.
• Sometimes, an activity is referred to as “a labor of love”. Tell about something that requires work, but that you love doing anyway.
• Tell what your family usually does to celebrate during the Labor Day weekend.
