Welcome!

I developed this program to use in a Resource Room where I have students in grades K-2. Most of the students I worked with could barely read, and they could not keep up with the lessons that were taught in the regular classroom. This program allows you to individually work with students on small “chunks” of reading so they don’t get overwhelmed.

Each unit of study contains five sight words (Dolch sight word list) that the students will memorize by sight, one set of phonics words that students will learn to sound out, and one story that uses the sight words and the phonics words. Students will continue to work on each unit until they are able to read each sight word correctly, sound out each word, and read through the passage independently. For some students, this may only take a few days. For other students, it may take 3—4 weeks.

Included in this packet are parent handouts so the students can work on these at home, progress charts so students can celebrate their growth, and all the materials you will need to teach this program in your classroom. We have also included a pre-test for those students who can “test-out” of early levels. The review sections in each unit make sure students keep prior words and stories fresh in their minds and prevent any “slide backs”.

Because this is a mastery program, it starts off easier and builds more difficulty as the units move forward. Once a student has mastered a sight word from a previous unit, they can expect to see it many times in other units.

What about the phonics? Phonics are taught expressly through sounding out the phonics words each week. As the units progress, the students will learn the rules for digraphs, vowel teams, and blends right along with these words.

Fluency is important! Every unit has a fluency passage the students will be able to read. The students can time themselves and graph their progress on the included chart to see how they are growing!

This program was designed for working with students one-on-one, however, it can easily be adapted to work in small groups by testing students ahead of time and grouping them according to their needed unit level.

I hope you enjoy this program!
