These beginning sound worksheets are perfect for teaching letter-sound correspondence.  Teaching letter-sound correspondence with letter identification increases phonics understanding and reading skills. As students master letter recognition, it is just as important to have letter-sound correspondence understanding.

 

With these letter-sound mats, students will demonstrate basic knowledge of letter-sound correspondences by producing the primary sound for each letter. Students will also discriminate between words that begin with the focus letter and those that do not. Perfect for beginning readers!

 

Common Letter Sounds Included:

B, D, F, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, W, Y, Z.

 

Vowel sounds:

Long and short. A, E, I, O, U.

 

Additional sounds:

Hard and Soft C and G

Unique letter:

Letter X is the only letter mat that focuses on ending sounds instead of beginning sounds.

 

2 LETTER SOUND MAT OPTIONS.

Each mat has 8 pictures and a focus letter with indicating sound.

LEVEL 1 HEART – All 8 pictures begin with the same letter sound.

LEVEL 2 STAR –2 or 3 pictures do not have the same letter sound.

 

LEVEL 1 letter sound mat, students will say the name of each picture (they may need support or teacher to say the picture names), identify the beginning sound, and color the pictures that begin with the focus letter. All of the pictures on the Level 1 mats have the same beginning sound as the focus letter.

 

LEVEL 2 letter sound mat, students will say the name of each picture, identify the beginning sound and color only the pictures that begin with the indicated sound for each focus letter. 2 or 3 pictures on the Level 2 mats do not match the focus letter sound.

 

The answer keys provide the names of each picture.
