Teaching students difficult strategies such as make a ten to add can be a REAL headache, especially if our little ones haven’t yet memorized all 11 ways to make ten. These Making Ten Activities will give your kids the practice they need to build their fact fluency, while keeping them engaged!

This Resource Includes:

• 10 engaging activities for math centers or independent practice that will give your students the practice they need to MASTER those combinations to ten and ultimately crush the make a ten to add strategy!
• Visual Instruction Cards that allow your students to complete these activities independently or with a partner/group without interrupting you while you work with other students.

Why I Use Make a Ten Activities with my Class

In a perfect world, I’d be able to teach my students how us the use the make a ten to add strategy exactly when my district math program directs me to in the scope and sequence.

Truth is, I’ve done that and… it didn’t go well.

While some students grasped the strategy immediately- most of them couldn’t follow all of the steps. It was taking up too much brain power just to remember the ways to make ten that they didn’t have anything left for figuring out the rest of the problem.

At that point, I realized I needed to take several steps back and address the root of the problem. Although my students learned how to decompose the number ten in kindergarten, many had forgotten (or perhaps didn’t learn it in the first place). How could I realistically teach them how to make a ten to add, when they didn’t know how to make a ten?

So, I created fun activities that could be used in math centers that would spiral review this skill. My students LOVED the activities and the repetition helped them remember the combinations. When we were ready to start the harder addition strategies, they were READY. It was a cinch. Those very activities inspired me to create the unicorn themed activities in this pack!
