In this highly-engaging lesson, students complete three hands-on activities to learn about the life, legacy, and history of Martin Luther King, Jr and the Martin Luther King, Jr Holiday!
First, students complete a short guided reading assignment that introduces Martin Luther King Jr’s main work. Next, students analyze a timeline where they learn about the major milestones in his legacy and hurdles in the creation of a national holiday for Martin Luther King, Jr.
Then, students then take their knowledge and put it on display by completing a “News Cast” assignment. Students step into the shoes of journalists and compile a report for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the newspaper in Atlanta, GA where King is buried. Finally, students complete a close-reading crossword puzzle activity that details the life of Martin Luther King Jr and the creation of his national holiday!
