Medial Vowel Sound Mats

Item description

These CVC medial vowel sound mats facilitate medial vowel sound understanding in CVC words. The variety of images build vocabulary, spelling, and understanding.

When using these medial vowel sound mats, students will identify, isolate, and pronounce the medial vowel sound in each CVC word. Students will also discriminate between CVC words that DO NOT have the medial vowel sound desired and those that do. They will isolate, pronounce, and blend the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds of CVC words.

There are 3 levels of mats for different levels of learners.

Level 1 – all 9 pictures have the same medial vowel sound. Students will say the name of each picture (they may need support to name the pictures). Then, they identify the medial vowel sound and color or cover the pictures that have the medial sound of the focus vowel. The answer key provides the names of each picture.

Level 2 – three pictures have different medial vowel sounds than the focus vowel. Students will say the name of each picture (they may need support to name the pictures). Then, they identify the medial vowel sound and color or cover the pictures that have the medial sound of the focus vowel. The answer key provides the names of each picture.

Level 3 – the pictures have different medial vowel sounds with no focus vowel. Students will say the name of each picture (they may need support to name the pictures). Then, they identify and circle the medial vowel sound in each box. There are two answer keys. One provides the names of each picture and the other provides the answers.

MAKE YOUR OWN CVC WORDS PAGE – Students will think of CVC words that have the focus medial vowel sound. They will sound out and blend the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds to create a word for each box. Students will write the CVC word in a box and draw a picture of the CVC word they have chosen.
