Struggling to find a comprehensive unit of CVC cards your kids won’t blow through before they’ve reached mastery? You’ll love these Montessori phonics picture cards and record keeping sheets, which were designed for spelling with the Montessori movable alphabet, but are perfect for any kindergarten or first grade reading center!

This set of Montessori CVC cards works like this:

  • Kids practice encoding Consonant Vowel Consonant words (called the Pink Series in Montessori) by sounding out, then spelling out, the word that matches the picture on each card
  • Use a standard sized wooden Montessori movable alphabet letters or the printable version included with the cards
  • Color-coded frames show kids how many letters to use and reinforce the CVC letter pattern
  • Once students work through the picture cards, they move on to the dictation lists, where their practice words are said aloud to them, and they spell each word onto cards without pictures
  • Kids can check themselves with the control cards

The CVC words are organized in two ways:  by beginning sound and by ending sound.  All together there are 17 lists of words.  By organizing by 2 difficulties, the child is able to  practice more with the cards to reach mastery while continuing to be engaged.

Each list focuses on either a specific letter or letters as a beginning sound or an ending sound (ex:  b- has a list, as does -b). There are 12 picture cards and picture control cards for each list.

Each list also has between 3 – 10 teacher’s dictation lists that focus on a further breakdown of the ‘parent’ list.  (ex:  b- dictation lists are ba-, be-, bi-, bo-, and bu-; -b dictation lists are -ab, -ib, -ob, -ub).  ((Note:  some difficulties have no more than 2 English words (such as -eb) and therefore do not have a dictation list.))  The dictation lists are used with empty frame cards on which students place movable alphabet letters during the exercise.  There are also control cards for these words for a child to check their work.

Included is a  master list/recording sheet of the words (both printable and editable Google Sheet) with the product, but have not marked the individual cards with a number.  Teachers can organize the cards by our recommendation or to their own preference.  The material could be printed one time and each card could be marked on the back in different corners to indicate its place separately in the beginning sounds and ending sounds lists.

Ideas for Use

After a child masters decoding and encoding letter sounds, working with consonant-vowel-consonant words (CVCs) is the next task in traditional Montessori classrooms.

This is how this material is used in our classrooms:

  • Beginning with the first list, the child spells out 3, 4, 6, or all 12 of the picture cards using movable alphabet letters.  How many words at a time depends on the ability and stamina of the child.
  • The picture card lists are designed to be customizable in their implementation! It would be simple to pull a sampling of cards from each list for doing spelling evaluations, for example.
  • After all the picture cards of a list have been spelled, the teacher can dictate words from one of the supporting dictation lists.  The child spells out the words onto empty frame cards then can check the work against the control cards.  Once a dictation list has been mastered, move to the next list in that series (ba- => be-, etc.)

  • Dictation lists are ba-, be-, bi-, bo-, and bu-

List 2 – Beginning sounds:  c-

Kids love spelling onto these attractive cards and checking their own work! Teachers love them because they can adapt the length of the exercises to their students’ individual needs! Students can spell out 3, 4, 6, or all 12 of the picture cards in a list… It all depends on what that student needs. 🙂
