In the past 150 years, researchers have learned a great deal about Neanderthals, the extinct human-like cousins of Homo sapiens (modern humans) who disappeared from the planet about 40,000 years ago. The appearance, behavior, and customs of Neanderthals as revealed by science are shared and discussed in this 1,000 word passage, including recent discoveries made through examination of their DNA and the human genome. This text and assessment work well for language arts, social studies, or science classes between grades 4-8.
