Nicknames lesson for Social Skills

A simple lesson to teach in Social Skills is the use of Nicknames. My students struggle with nicknames. Sometimes they give a peer a nickname that is inappropriate. Other times they “Accept” a nickname that is inappropriate. This is a quick, free,  lesson I’ve used and refer to from time to time. Best suited for older students but can be used for upper elementary as well.

Your students will receive 16 cards which consist of 3 instructional cards, 12 multiple choice cards and 1 drag and drop activity.  I would suggest running the deck as a group lesson and then assigning for HW to assess the skill. Some basic interference skills are required.

The cards work well with older students (Grades 6- 10)  or best when used with students who have mild-moderate cognitive delays yet good language skills. An independent lesson will take about 5-10 minutes however if you are using it as a teaching tool during instruction the lesson can easily fill 20 minutes with breaks in between for group discussion. When I use this lesson with my Social Skills classroom it takes 20-30 minutes.

 To use Boom Cards, you must be connected to the Internet. Boom Cards play on modern browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge). Apps are available for modern Android, iPads, iPhones, and Kindle Fires. For security and privacy, adults must have a Boom Learning account to use and assign Boom Cards. You will be able to assign the Boom Cards you are buying with “Fast Pins,” (a form of play that gives instant feedback to students for self-grading Boom Cards). This option is FREE once you purchase this deck. You do NOT need a paid BOOM account to access or assign BOOM cards.

BOOM cards are an excellent resource for both independent work as well as a supplement to classroom instruction. BOOM cards are a web-based, interactive platform that is self-checking with sound! A student will need access to a boom account which is free for you and the student. You can then assign this deck digitally. The deck is SELF-SCORING and NO PREP WORK IS NEEDED.
