Abstract and figurative language are always harder for students in language therapy or ESL or ELL classes. My students were always confused by the typical idiom lessons that included literal pictures of the idiom’s meaning. These were especially hard for my concrete learners and those students on the Autism Spectrum.This themed packet is DIFFERENT because it gives students a logical way to group idioms ( by seasonal theme) while still scaffolding them through the learning process.
Themes addressed in the October Packet include : Columbus Day, Scarecrows, Trees & Forests, Spiders and Pumpkins.
Each theme includes 24 cards that can be laminated and cut out and used to play varied games such as memory or as a matching game. The cards can also be used while playing any therapist chosen game.
Two worksheets are included that can be used as a follow up activity or as a stand alone teaching tool with your older students.( I can’t wait to use them with both my middle and high school students this fall). Answer keys are included.
