Perspective taking activities for social skills and social inferences SEL

Item description

This is a fun and engaging way to teach perspective taking, making social inferences and social skills. Using real life pictures, students make predictions about ‘what are they thinking,’ learn social awareness, make smart social guesses, learn how to read the social setting and make social predictions.

Social skills and perspective taking skills for upper elementary grade 3, grade 4, grade 5, grade 6 students for social emotional learning (SEL). Students will practice perspective taking, inferencing and social skills by utilizing these fun “fill in the speech/thought bubble” task cards.

These cards are targeted toward upper elementary students. Students will get to practice:

1: Reading a social situation and interaction between different students

2: Making smart guesses about what the interaction may make students ‘think’

3: Making smart guesses about how the students may respond in that interaction (what they are likely to say?)

Task cards can be laminated so responses can be hand written using a dry erase marker so task cards can be reused. 50 different social scenario task cards are provided.

For each of the different social interactions/task cards, 2 social reflection worksheets are included to provide additional social inferencing practice pertaining to each specific social scenario. These worksheets have been created to target a variety of different social areas including:

-Making social predictions (what may happen next?)

-Perspective taking (making predictions on how others may feel)

-Thinking about how different actions may affect other people.

-Analyzing others’ behaviors (Are they doing the right thing? What SHOULD they be doing?)

-What consequences may be experienced as a result of an action?

-Thinking about how the choice of spoken words may affect how others in the scenario feel (and then based upon those feelings, how that will affect what the other people may do next/what they may say back)

Specifically, within this product, you will find the following activities (each activity comes with both a color AND black and white option):

1. 100 Task cards (write in your response)

This file contains printable task cards of all 50 social scenarios (to be cut out and laminated) where students can write in what they think the main character will think AND say (using a dry erase marker). A task card is provided for both what your student will think the main character will think AND then a separate task card for what they will say.

2. 100 Task cards modified (multiple choice options provided)

This file contains printable task cards of all 50 social scenarios (as provided in file 1 above) where students can select an answer from 3 options. A task card is provided for both what your student will think the main character will think AND then a separate task card for what they will say.

3. Extension activity worksheets

This file contains printable worksheets that provide extension activities/social questions for each of the targeted social/behavioral scenarios provided on the task cards. These can be used to help further develop social understanding of each of the scenarios. Students will get to further develop their perspective taking skills, make social predictions, predict social consequences and suggest alternate behaviors/actions/responses. An answer key is provided for this activity.

4. What will others say and do?

This file contains an activity where students are able to provide their own responses to what the main character in each scenario will both think AND say. Students will then analyze how the main character’s words would make the other people in the scenario feel/what it may make the other people do and then what the other people may say back to the main character.
