About Phonological and Phonemic Awareness

Phonological and phonemic awareness are a vital set of skills that allows us to learn how to read.

Research suggests that trouble with phoneme awareness and phonological skills early on is a gauge for poor reading and spelling skills.

As teachers, it is our responsibility to ensure our students have a strong, and competent reading foundation. I wanted to have all the phonological and phonemic awareness skills in one place, so to explicitly cater for all students. I created my own phonological and phonemic awareness assessment.

How will this Set of Assessments Help my Students and make it Easier for me?

Please note: This is not a phonics assessment. This file focuses on phonological and phonemic awareness skills (an about section is included in the assessment binder).

Assessments:

ALL the guess work is done for you, the assessments cover 34 phonological and phonemic awareness skills. 

You will be able to perform, and document the initial assessment, and progress monitoring there after. After assessing your students you will have an individual document which plots their benchmark. 

You can then revisit the skills the student didn’t display in the assessment up to three more times in one year. You can then plot your whole class to get an overview of your data, and interpret general trends which will inform your planning.
