Item description

In this Physics CER Inertia Lab, students will investigate Newton’s First Law of Motion, the Law of Inertia. The lesson peaks their curiosity into Newton’s Laws with inquiry activities and discussions. Presentation then covers the 3 types of inertia – inertia of rest, motion and direction, followed by forces that act on motion and lab instructions. Students will then apply their new knowledge in a CER lab to determine how inertia is related to mass. Includes presentation (34 slides) with lesson, video, lab instructions and teacher resources. Student note pages support lesson (3 student pages + 3 teacher key pages) and student lab pages provide CER structure with instructions, data tables and results section (3 student lab pages). And yes, I actually took the cover picture of the car with a couch on it! That car literally pulled up next to me at a stop light. It inspired this lesson, I hope you enjoy it.

Objective: Students will investigate Newton’s First Law of Motion, the Law of Inertia.  Students will then apply their new knowledge in a CER lab to determine how inertia is related to mass.

Science Standards – TEKS: Science Skills: 6.2D, 8.2(D) construct tables and graphs, using repeated trials and means, to organize data and identify patterns; 8.6(C)  investigate and describe applications of Newton’s three laws of motion such as in vehicle restraints, sports activities, amusement park rides, Earth’s tectonic activities and rocket launches

NGSS: MS-PS2-2.  Plan an investigation to provide evidence that the change in an object’s motion depends on the sum of the forces on the object and the mass of the object.

Lesson Structure and Teacher Tips: The lesson structure is introduction and quick explanation, followed by a lab. Depending on the length of class, this lesson can take 1-2 class days.
