Item description

These Response to Fiction Task Cards give students an opportunity to make independent choices for reflecting on and responding to fiction. They are appropriate for use with individual, whole-class, or small group assignments, and also for responding to independent reading. They are especially useful for Readers’ and Writers’ Workshop environments.

The open-ended literature response prompts on these task cards are generic enough to be used with almost any work of fiction, and specific enough to address a variety of story elements.

The cards are
color-coded for three levels of difficulty making it easy to differentiate according to student ability and need. Red borders indicate the simplest prompts and responses; blue-bordered cards ask for a little more thinking, and cards with green borders require more complex reflection.

Included are
two identical sets of forty-eight different task cards. One set has color clip art, the second set has blackline clip art. Both sets have colored borders.

Included are prompts or questions about
– character

– setting

– problem & solution

– cause & effect

– sequencing

– plot points

– making comparisons

– making predictions

– using descriptive vocabulary

– supporting personal opinions

…. and more!

Many of the prompts include a drawing task along with the writing prompt. A few ask students to draw first, then write.
These task cards can be used repeatedly, throughout the school year.
Keep them accessible in a basket for self-selection by students.
These literature response materials are targeted for the primary grades, but would be appropriate for any elementary grades, depending on student ability.

Copy onto card stock, cut and laminate. If a color printer is not available, print in black and white and add sticky dots or a hand-colored border to mark for color code.
Or, print on regular paper, cut apart and mount on colored construction paper and laminate.

I am a retired elementary classroom teacher, a former art teacher, an artist and a writer. I have a Multiple Subjects credential, a Single Subject credential for Art and English, LDS/ESL certification, a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education with a Mathematics focus, and Montessori certification. I have worked with all elementary grades, and with special groups including ELL, GATE, and At-Risk students. Creating Art With Kids and Share2Learn lessons and resources are designed to foster student creativity, choice, and independence, and to encourage authentic art-making. Consideration is given to developmental appropriateness, differentiation possibilities, and teacher individuality. For this reason, directions are general, expectations are open-ended, and clip art on student pages is kept to a minimum.
