Item description

Introduce data in a way most students don’t think of as data! Engage students by showing them how data is being used as a source of expression and knowledge. Fun, visual, intriguing and creative lesson to develop science and data skills as your students learn about incredible data artists and turn that knowledge into their own project (art graph or infographic). Student choice is possible in the content of the graph, and the way the student chooses to express and communicate their data. They will never look at data and graphs the same again!

Objective: Students will learn about the different ways that data is presented and shown to the public. Data can be more than numbers, even when serving the purpose of communicating scientific knowledge. Students will have the option to create an art graph or make an infographic based on researched scientific data.

Science Standards – TEKS: 8.2(D) construct tables and graphs, using repeated trials and means, to organize data and identify patterns

Science Skills: Data presentation and communication

ATL/SEL Skills:  These are known as “Approaches to Learning” skills (ATL). These are more commonly known as SEL or social and emotional skills. ATL Skills for this lesson: Research Skills – Present information in a variety of formats and platforms and Creative Thinking skills – create original works and ideas; use existing works and ideas in new ways

Lesson Structure and Teacher Tips:  Teacher presentation demonstrates and engages students by exposing them to different ways that data is being used as an extension of human expression. Once students have seen these examples, students get the chance to choose between an art graph or infographic to research scientific data for their own project. This can all be done in class or part of it at home. Digital and hand-drawn are possible choices.
