HOW IT WORKS

• The PowerPoint has animation and sound, so you can watch as an animated flower grows petals (synonyms) for a target word. The interactive presentation allows students to use the provided Flower Organizer to stay engaged.
• Synonyms are introduced as words with the same or similar meaning but not exact meaning.
• Then students are introduced to the idea that synonyms are used to improve writing and are given exercises to substitute a word with an appropriate synonym.
• Of course, that leads to a discussion of shades of meaning and what is an appropriate synonym substitution.
• The presentation continues with the concept of shades of meaning. A paint sample strip is used as a metaphor to illustrate the shades of meaning between similar words.
• Students practice with three exercises using the Paint Sampler provided for duplication.
• Example sentences are given to show the student how the intensity of the words increases as shades of meaning go deeper (the shades on the paint strip go darker).
