This picture book companion is the perfect supplemental resource for the book, “She Made a Monster: How Mary Shelley Created Frankenstein,” by Lynn Fulton. It’s the perfect interactive read-aloud for a biography unit, an author study, Women’s History Month, or even the days or weeks leading up to Halloween. Students will be intrigued as they learn how the tale of Frankenstein came to be and will love the engaging and fun activities. Students will identify story elements; determine tone and mood in images; search for symbolism; apply the elements of plot to write creative stories; sequence events from their own creative writing; research the author; practice reading text and illustrations to gain a better understanding; and so much more! • Slideshow of Images with Captions – Present the slideshow for whole group activities, or students can use the QR Code on the handouts to view the slideshow independently on a device.
• Story Elements – Students fill in the boxes with words and pictures to represent the story elements.
• Plot Map – Students organize the events of the story on the graphic organizer.
• Character Traits – Students highlight the most important trait for each character and provide examples from the text.
• Character Change – Students evaluate how the main character changed from the beginning of the story to the end.
• Character Summary – Students summarize the main character of the story.
• Comparing Characters – Students select two characters from the story and compare their thoughts, feelings, and actions.
• Tone and Mood in Art – Students will identify the tone and mood in the pictures, choose words they think relate the best, and explain their thinking.
• Symbolism Activity – Students identify and analyze symbolism found in the story.
• Theme – Students determine the theme of the story and provide text evidence.
• Descriptive Language – Students will read the examples taken from the text. Then, reread the story to find an example of each technique.
• Considering Context – Students summarize the contextual factors in relation to the story and make notes on how that may have influenced particular textual elements. QR codes link to helpful information.
• Reader Response Questions – Students will respond to short-answer questions related to the story.
• Scientists vs Nature – Students create a social media post that illustrates a modern-day example of science interfering with nature.
• Wait… There’s More! – Students will create 2 more pages for the end of the book which includes a few sentences and colorful illustrations similar to those used in the story.
• Art Appreciation – Students choose an image that caught their attention and reflect on how the image made them feel, what it reminded them of, and what they imagined as they viewed it. A QR code is included on the handout which links to a slideshow of the images in color.
• Sensational Writing – Students describe the image using the senses listed on the page and write 4-5 sentences describing the image with adverbs and adjectives.
• Author Study – Students research further into the life of the author Mary Shelley to learn more about her life and writing.
• Creative Writing Brainstorming Graphic Organizers – Students can use these graphic organizers for any of the creative writing activities.
