This hands-on, short vowel CVC Word Family Spin and Cover Activity is fantastic to get your students practicing reading, recognizing, matching and writing CVC words. It will help build their word fluency and best of all, your students will love playing this fun and engaging phonics activity!

This CVC word family spin and cover activity set is designed for you to use in class to complement lessons, in groups to support and reinforce learning, to promote knowledge and understanding, set out in centers to use independently, print out and use at home… the possibilities are endless!


You will need:

You will need a plastic spinner or a pencil and paperclip. You will also need different colored sets of Snap cubes, Unifix cubes or counters to cover the squares.


How to use:

– Print and laminate the mats or put them in dry erase pocket sleeves.

– In pairs, students take it in turns to spin the spinner. They will find a word/picture that matches the word family or vowel sound and place their colored counter or cubes over that square. The game continues until all the words have been read and the squares have been covered. The winner is the one with the most covered squares.


Extension idea:

– Students write the words that they have read and covered on a whiteboard.
