Boundaries are guidelines, rules, or limits that separates your physical space, feelings, and needs from others. Social boundaries represent physical and emotional limits that you don’t want people to cross. They identify a safe and permissible way for other people to behave towards you. Being able to set and respect boundaries is a crucial part of self-care and personal development that will serve your students well throughout their entire lives. Teaching boundaries and personal space to your students is essential in helping them reach and maintain successful personal relationships, increase self-esteem and awareness, and take responsibility for creating a life that they choose versus one they are simply at the will of others.

This resource features of 72 fun, engaging, and highly relevant SCENARIOS that students can relate to and use to help them practice setting and communicating boundaries to friends, family members, partners (boyfriends and girlfriends), teachers, etc. Students will also be able to practice respecting the boundaries of others.

These scenarios are intended to help students role-play and practice:

☆ Setting healthy social boundaries with others

☆ Respecting other people’s boundaries

☆ Navigating difficult social situations

☆ Having difficult conversations without sounding accusatory or confrontational

☆ Articulating personal feelings and communicating boundaries respectfully

☆ Recognizing and addressing when boundaries are being crossed, ignored, or violated

☆ Brainstorming solutions to boundary-related problems and conflicts

☆ Speaking out against unwanted behaviors

The scenarios provide guidance for real-life situations. You can use these scenarios as a basis for engaging students in conversations about best solutions to setting and communicating boundaries, addressing people who have crossed lines (or boundaries), having difficult conversations, and resolving conflicts related to boundaries.

Ultimately, these scenarios will help young people think about what behaviors are acceptable to them and what is not, and communicate it in such a way that others understand.

This resource includes both print and digital versions (with text boxes already created)! You can assign activities to students in person or remotely – either way works!

How/When To Use the Scenario Task Cards

Role-Playing: The scenarios provide students with opportunities to discuss, understand, and role play the variety of effective ways they can set and communicate boundaries as well as respect the boundaries of others. You can also have each pair read their scenario and then role-play the scenario in front of the class, trying to find a positive resolution to the situation. Students can brainstorm many ways to communicate feelings and boundaries. Each pair also watches another pair’s role-play as commenters: they have the power to freeze the action of the role-play and make comments and suggestions to the role-players to guide them towards a positive resolution. You can use the Task Cards with no questions to generate your OWN questions and activities!

Icebreaker: This can be a great way to start a meeting, training session, or team-building activity. It’s also a great way to get students to get to know each other and how they would deal with certain situations. It may assist you in getting them to buy into the purpose of an upcoming activity or lesson.

Play Writing Exercise: Students can work in groups to create skits or scenes then perform the skits for the class.

Writing Response: Students can be given a scenario to read and then write their responses: What boundaries would you set in this situation and how would you communicate it to the person involved? How would you address someone who ignores or violates your boundaries in this situation? What would you decide to do and why? Students can swap papers with a partner who then reads their responses and determines whether they agree/disagree with their responses/approaches to these real-life scenarios/situations.

Discussion: Students can discuss the Scenario Task Cards in groups or whole class.
