Have a meaningful sound wall with real mouth photos and photo cards that your students can easily use and relate to their own environment!

Students can better match their mouths with the student mouth photos on the sound wall when saying/learning the sounds and searching for sounds on the sound wall. In addition, the real keyword photos are similar to objects they see in their environment thus helping make connections to the real world.

The goal of a sound wall is to help students become proficient readers and spellers by helping them build solid phoneme-grapheme correspondence.

This sound wall is set up to go from speech to print so it can help young students connect the speech sounds they already know to how those sounds are represented in print.

The real mouth photos are first. They create an awareness of articulation (how the sound is formed with the mouth) which not only helps anchor each phoneme into memory but also helps students distinguish between letters that look alike or sound similar.

The mouth cards were photographed by a speech pathologist and show close-ups of diverse students’ mouths as they are producing the 44 phonemes. They also include the phoneme (sound) and a voice icon if the sound is voiced.

Having these student mouth photographs first on the sound wall not only aids students in seeing how the sound is made but also makes it easier for them to search for a sound on the sound wall. They can easily find it by matching how their mouth looks when making the sound.

The keyword photographs are next. They help remind students of the sound and were carefully selected to ensure that they represent the phoneme (sound).

The word/spelling cards are last. Each individual card has a real photograph to help young students remember the word and the entire word is shown with the spelling pattern highlighted in a different color (vowels are red, consonants are blue). This helps young students recognize that the individual letters form words and where in the words the spelling patterns occur.

Each spelling pattern has its own individual word spelling card so you can put them on your sound wall as they are learned (build it together with your students) and choose which ones to use.

This sound wall bundle also has alphabet cards with real mouth pictures and keyword photos to help students learn both the uppercase and lowercase letters.

The alphabet cards move from speech to print by first showing the mouth picture to help with articulation and how to say the sound. The keyword picture is next which helps remind students of the sound. Lastly, the print (the uppercase and lowercase letters) is shown which helps students connect the speech sound to how it is represented in print.

There are 2 cards for each vowel (long vowel card and short vowel card).

I also included 2 options for the letters – a regular print and a letter formation print. The letter formation option shows students how to correctly form the letter which can be helpful to young students.

They are perfect supplemental materials for your sound wall, especially when teaching young students both the uppercase and lowercase forms of the letters.

The cards can also be used in centers or during small groups. Students can rainbow trace the letters, form the letters with play dough, use small cars to follow the letter formation arrows, sort the cards, find the correct cards after hearing a sound, etc.
