DECODABLE READER

To complete the book, students will:

• Read a list a sight words found in the story, checking off the ones they know

• Read the target vowel teams, producing the correct sound

• Read the story of Stone Soup

• Highlight words in the story with the target vowel teams

• Add pictures to the story that support the text (cut and glue)

• Re-read the story to build fluency

• Answer comprehension questions about the story

• Record words they highlighted, sorting by phonics pattern

Skills include:

• read words with vowel pairs in context and isolation

• recall story details

• use context clues to understand unfamiliar words

• identify cause and effect relationships in the text

WORD CARDS

Each card includes a picture and a word from the story that contains a vowel team. The words have elkonin boxes in place of the target letters. Students say the word and determine what vowels are missing. These cards can be laminated and used with dry erase markers in your reading centers. Includes 20 cards.

On each worksheet, students read and sort words containing the focus vowel pairs. On worksheet 1, there are also pictures with words that contain elkonin boxes in place of the vowels. Students say the word and fill in the missing letters. On worksheet 2, they complete long A words by adding the correct vowel team. On worksheet 3, they sort the words by the sound the OO or OU produces.
