Looking for a great hands-on way to teach your students to read vowel-consonant words? This activity is perfect for your literacy centers! Children should say the sounds as they drive their toy car past the trees and then blend them together to read the word.

 

Road mats with the following words are provided in color and b/w (one word per mat):

 

•it, in, is, if

•an, am, at, as

•up, us

•on, of

 

Each word is also written on a car flashcard (colour copy and B&W copy). These could be used for assessment purposes or children could match them to the correct road mats.
