Item description

This is a series of two lessons for Anthony Doerr’s All the Light We Cannot See. se lessons should be completed after having read to section One 1934 (Pages 42-43). During the first lesson, students watch an and interesting video about Hitler Youth to gain better insight about the historical period. This video is five minutes long. Links to video are included in the lesson document. Students find the Hitler Youth video fascinating (and horrifying) because it focuses on the education system of Germany during the 1930s. This video will spark engaging classroom discussion as students make connections to their own lives and what it would have been like to live through such a challenging experience. This lesson provides students a meaningful opportunity to discuss the ethical and moral dilemmas that the German public faced under the Nazi regime.

For the second lesson, students review a scene from the novel that focuses on the topic of Hitler Youth as boys from Werner’s town are recruited to Hitler Youth camps. Students make connections between what they learned from the historical video to Doerr’s scene. My students enjoyed these two lessons, because it put into context Werner’s experience and reminded students that the events of the novel are based on what actually happened in our world not very long ago.

All documents were made on Google Docs. and are compatible with Google Classroom. If you prefer students work by hand, you can print out the lesson as a packet and have students compete the work on a separate sheet of paper.
