Item description

This purchase includes two lessons for Anthony Doerr’s All the Light We Cannot See. Students complete a close reading of two different scenes from Part 4, 1944 of the novel (pages 201-211).  In the first scene, students analyze Sergeant Major von Rumpel’s plan to find the Sea of Flames diamond from Etienne’s apartment. This is an exciting scene that builds a lot of tension in the story. The second scene focuses on Werner, who is trapped in the bombed building. This scene is very captivating as Werner begins to lose his will to survive. The main skills practiced in these two lessons are quote analysis, building vocabulary, determining and analyzing literary devices, and writing a paragraph response.

The structure of this assignment is as follows: students closely review the passage, then they complete a vocabulary activity to gain a better understanding of the higher-level words in the passage. After, students answer literary analysis questions to gain a deeper understanding of Doerr’s passage. Within the assignment, students also complete a literary analysis paragraph responses. Then, students complete a second lesson with this same format.

Questions move beyond comprehension and instead provide students the opportunity to analyze for the deeper meaning. The included close readings are highly engaging passages, and it will take two class periods to complete both assignments. These assignments can be assigned as a class assignment, homework, or function as a ready to teach sub plan.

All documents were made on Google Docs., are editable to fit your classroom needs, and are compatible with Google Classroom. These assignments were intended to be completed digitally, but you can print this out as a packet and have students complete the questions on a separate sheet of paper if this better suits your classroom needs.
