Item description

Students learn how to:

  • make sprites talk with speech and thought bubbles,
  • incorporate sounds, including recording their own audio,
  • add the text to speech Scratch extension,
  • use broadcasting commands to create communication between sprites.

The editable PowerPoint includes short embedded videos that demonstrate what the student program should be doing at certain points, and it ends with directions for a culminating activity for students to demonstrate their learning. There is also a rubric for the activity. Screenshots are from Scratch 3.0.

Coding across the curriculum? This would be a great computer lesson to incorporate into almost any class. Once students are able to code characters that can communicate, they can write programs to share information on any topic they learned in a class such as science, history, English, etc. (Examples: code a tour guide sharing information about an important place in history; code a dialogue where one character teaches another an important concept such as mitosis).
