Descriptive Writing Information Book (18 page PDF file)

This book is to be used as a guide when completing the worksheets or PPT Quiz.

It includes information about:

  • Show, don’t tell writing techniques with Show, don’t tell examples
  • Expanding vocabulary with descriptive writing words
  • Making suitable language choices with descriptive writing words
  • Replacing words with suitable synonyms
  • Examples of figurative language ( metaphors, similes, personification, hyperbole, symbolism and figurative language examples in literature )
  • Famous literary text samples ( Little Women, Black Beauty and White Fang )

Interactive PowerPoint Quiz:

  • The questions in this quiz are based on the content that is covered in the Descriptive Writing Information Book. There is 1 version for students to use individually on their computers and 1 version that can be used with a classroom of students. The quiz can be uploaded and used in the same way on Google Slides (the sound effects will only work on the original PowerPoint files). The quiz has 10 questions, and instructions on how to open and use the quiz are included. An interactive scoring sheet that students can use when completing the quiz in the classroom has also been included. The scoring sheet was designed to be printed and used with the classroom version of the quiz, but has also been made interactive for digital use.

*The literacy tasks in this resource have been written to meet English / ELA curriculum requirements for the following year levels: Year 5, Year 6, Year 7 and Year 8.
