NEW RESOURCE:

In this word search on steroids, students learn the 33 most challenging vocabulary words (like “ubiquitous,” “gregarious,” and “precipitous”) that they’ll encounter in Richard Adams’ novel Watership Down as they read. This activity is a word find combined with elements of a crossword puzzle, resulting in a vocabulary-building exercise since students are only given a few of letters of the words they’ll be looking for and the number of letters contained in each wordSee Preview.

This lesson is meant as a pre-reading activity, but it can be used at any point in your unit. This can be done solo, but it’s challenging and might best be done in teams (your call).

BONUS: This document contains SIX versions of the puzzle of various difficulty, based on how many letters for each term are revealed. That way you can decide how challenging you want to make it by choosing the appropriate version for your particular students.

Example:

  • Version 1______________ – (12) steady persistence
  • Version 2p______________ – (12) steady persistence
  • Version 3pe_____________ – (12) steady persistence
  • Version 4pe_____________e – (12) steady persistence
  • Version 5per___ver___ce – (12) steady persistence
  • Version 6perseverance – (12) steady persistence

This exercise comes as a PDF document and includes a complete key.
