These good friendship activities and friendship sorting cards are perfect as a back to school or back from break activity. Use these cards in group discussions about what it means to be a good friend and making good friendship choices. Use them in a pocket chart sort in whole or small groups.

This is a great activity at the beginning of the year or as a refresher after the kids come back from seasonal breaks or whenever you feel that it is time to review friendship behavior and what it means to be a good friend!

This resource contains 42 behavior cards in color and black and white. There are 24 good friendship choice cards and 18 bad friendship choice cards.

Also included is multiple heading choices so you can pick which one works for your classroom. Pick the set that you want, print, laminate along with the headings of your choice.

Ways these can be used:

  • At the beginning of the school year to discuss what it means to be a friend and good/bad friendship choices and behaviors in the classroom or at school
  • During the year or after the seasonal breaks to reinforce expected behaviors in class and between students
  • Get students thinking about making “good” or “sweet” friendship choices
  • Group class discussions on each behavior and how it affects the emotional state of others involved
  • Discussions on what to do after a student displays “bad” friendship choices
  • Whole or small group sort using a pocket chart

Also included are 7 extension activities that can be used after discussing and sorting the choice cards.

Activity 1:

Mix a set of good and bad choice cards together. Allow the student to pick three random cards. They then write the description of the behavior, draw an image in the box depicting the behavior, color if it is good or bad and explain why.

Activity 2:

This is good for younger learners who cannot yet write. There are two columns. Under each column the student draws 3 good friendship behaviors and 3 bad friendship behaviors. You could also get them to label their image or write a few words if they can to describe the behavior. These pages come in two versions, one with boxes and one with hearts. Also, two different heading options, “Good & Bad” or “Sweet & Sour”

Activity 3
Students color in the pictures that show ways to be a good friend

Activity 4
Students color, cut, sort and glue pictures into the correct column

Activity 5

Friendship Challenge: Pick a time frame that students get to complete these challenges. For example a week or a day etc. Students color in each box when they complete the challenge. You could use incentives, eg. the one who completes the most gets a prize.

Activity 6:

Students write inside the heart different ways they can be a “good” friend.

Activity 7:

Good Friendship word search – students search for the friendship words inside the grid and circle or color.

There are two versions, one with only 6 simple words for the younger kids and a bigger word search with longer words and more words for the older kids. Pick which suits your students or use both to differentiate.

Answer sheets have been included for these two pages.
