Item description

Thanks so much for checking out this product! This download includes SET 2 of the GRADE 5 writing prompts in STANDARDIZED-TEST format (my students take the TCAP / TNReady tests, but they would work great for SMARTER BALANCED or PARCC tests, too) for use with ReadWorks® nonfiction paired passages, “Health and Safety in Winter.”

The NO-PREP set includes 2 different prompts for each of the following text types (6 prompts in all)explanatoryopinion, and narrative. I’ve also included, in a separate, EDITABLE file, success criteria rubrics (which can also be used as student self-checklists) for each text type.

Prior to use, if you don’t already have an account, you will need to sign up for a FREE account at www.readworks.org so you can access the paired passages (you can find a direct link to this set’s passages on the second “Teacher Directions” page of this download).

Once you have a ReadWorks® account, you have the option to assign the passages to your students digitally, or you may download and print the passages. Each passage includes comprehension questions and an optional vocabulary activity, added bonuses for student accountability. If you assign the passages digitally, you also can allow some or all students to listen to the text read aloud.

ReadWorks® is easy to navigate, and the site has an extensive Teacher Guide section to help you if needed. Check out the screenshot on the next page to see a ReadWorks® page preview.

Here’s how I use these prompts:

1) I assign the passages to my students digitally and print the writing prompt I have chosen so two fit on a single page (using screenshots of the prompts). I allow selected students (those with IEP accommodations that allow my state’s [TN] standardized assessments to be read aloud to them) the ability to listen to the audio text versions.

2) I require students to achieve a minimum score on the comprehension questions before I give them a copy of the writing prompt. ReadWorks® allows teachers to reassign passages (to either REDO or REVISE answers) as many times as needed; doing so helps ensure they understand the texts before trying to write about them.

3) I use the additional prompt for each text type to allow for extra practice with familiar text or for rewrites after reteaching or conferring with students.

If you like this product, I have 4 more sets just like it. Additionally, I have 5 similar sets for use with FICTION ReadWorks® paired passages.

Happy Teaching, Tribe!
