Item description

This resource is part of my Heroic Women series and is an informational passage and assessment on the first African-American congresswoman and female Democratic presidential candidate, the amazing Shirley Chisholm (1924-2005). This under-appreciated hero’s bold actions and fearless attitude set the stage for many of the advancements made by African-Americans and women in the past fifty years. Highly-educated and outspoken, Shirley was an author, educator, and politician like no other and an inspiration to millions during her lifetime and beyond. This text details her life from her childhood in Brooklyn and Barbados to her presidential bid in 1972 and beyond, ending with her Presidential Medal of Freedom, which was awarded posthumously in 2015.

This resource includes:

1) A 950-word biographical passage titled “Shirley Chisholm: Unbought and Unbossed.” The passage is at a middle school reading level and follows Shirley’s life and her accomplishments from birth until her death in 2005.

2) A set of 32 questions, including vocabulary, comprehension, and interpretation. Questions can only be answered by a careful first reading and close re-reading of the passage and were created to align with Common Core Informational Text Standards RI.3.8, RI.4.1, RI.5.4, RI.6.4, and RH.6-8.8

3) An additional crossword puzzle for early finishers or as an alternative form of assessment.

4) Answers to every question.
