This is a history reading passage and comprehension assessment on Jacques Cartier, the French explorer who sailed to North America in the 16th century. He made three voyages to Canada, hoping to find a route to Asia and to claim lands for France. In 1534, he explored the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and in 1535, he sailed up the St. Lawrence River. He named Canada and helped pave the way for French colonization in the New World, marking a significant chapter in exploration history. This passage is written for Grade 5-8 students and can be used in a number of ways by teachers (close reading, direct instruction in class, independent practice, homework, test prep, assessment, sub work, centers, etc).
